Knowing how the season shapes wind, cover, water, and animal movement is the edge that turns sightings into ethical shots. Here’s how we plan across the year.

South Africa (Limpopo Bushveld)

  • April–June (early dry): Cool mornings, thinning grass, steady winds. Prime for walk-and-stalk on kudu, impala, zebra, wildebeest. Bowhunting improves as vegetation opens.

  • July–August (mid-winter): Cold dawns, crisp spoor, longest visibility. Water patterns stabilize—excellent for blinds/hides and ambushes near travel corridors.

  • September–October (late dry): Warm afternoons concentrate game at remaining water; dust and mirage require patient shooting and good glass.

  • November–March (green season): Rains add cover and feed; animals spread out. We slow the pace, glass edges, and time sits to feeding/cooling cycles. Outstanding birdlife and photography.

Namibia

May–September mirrors South Africa’s dry rhythm: open country, long glassing, and clear rifle shot calls; bow sits over water are reliably productive.

Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania

  • Dry seasons (May–October; Tanzania July–October): Best for tracking in mopane, miombo, and sand; shrinking pans focus movement.

  • Early vs. late dry: Early offers cooler temps; late concentrates game but increases heat and dust—plan hydration and patient ambushes.

Moon & Wind

  • Moon phase: Dark moons extend morning/evening movement; bright moons push activity to pre-dawn and last light.

  • Wind & thermals: Mornings pull downslope, late day rise—every stalk is routed to keep scent out of the animal’s world.
